8-Sep-2007
A valiant effort by the Americans limited the world cup defending champions England to a 28-10 win in the first Pool A match of Rugby World Cup 2007.
Pre-game odds were for the English to win by around 40 points, but the USA went into the match with strong determination and almost scored the first try 20 minutes into the game. The English were unable to make a substantial lead and it took them 35 minutes before they managed to cross the line for the first time. They scored another try just before half time making the score 21-3 at the break.
The second half saw a continuation of fortitude by the Americans, despite another try for England as Tom Rees charged over the line after taking a quick penalty. The score then remained at 28-3 until the 74th minute when the United States finally scored a try of their own - Moeakiola touched down and Hercus converted bringing the final score to 28-10.
