Sea Eagles beat the the Eagles 25-15

12-Sep-2007

Tonga had a good start to Rugby World Cup 2007, scoring three tries to defeat the USA in their pool A match at Stade de la Mosson on Wednesday.

The Ikale Tahi (Sea Eagles) set the pace early on and they managed to score after just two minutes as number 8 Finau Maka charged over the line from a rolling maul. With the conversion by Pierre Hola and a penalty three minutes later the Tongans virtually began the game with 10-0 advantage.

The halftime score was 13-3 but the USA's Mike MacDonald closed the gap somewhat with a try in the 47th minute, bringing the Americans back within striking range of a victory. The match continued to intensify with both Tonga and the USA scoring converted tries before the 70th minute, setting the scene for a close and interesting finish. Tonga sealed their victory with a final try 10 minutes before fulltime, awarding the Ikale Tahi their third-ever Rugby Worl Cup match win.
