Italy win 24-18 over Romania
12-Sep-2007
It was a physical match up front but the Azzurri prevailed. Romania lost their first RWC 2007 game but have received 1 bonus point for the close score.
Romania had the first chance to score with a penalty in the third minute but Iulian Dumitras couldn't get the ball over the posts so it was Italy that began the scoring with a try by Santiago Dellapè a few minutes later. Neither team had much kicking success in the first half as David Bortulussi missed the conversion and both teams missed penalties later in the half, though Bortulussi managed one penalty to put Italy at a 8-0 lead.
Romania came back strongly after the break scoring two tries within about five minutes and moving ahead on the scoreboard. But their lead was short-lived as flanker Alexandru Manta was sinbinned in the 52nd minute and Italy was awarded a penalty try a minute later. The match remained tense until the end but Italy proved to be more accurate in penalty kicks, allowing them to close the game with a 6 point lead. Related articles:
