Argentina win 33-3 in tough match against Georgia

11-Sep-2007

World 17th ranked team Georgia gave Argentina a run for their money at Stade Gerland with the halftime score at just 6-3, but four second-half tries gave Argentina a win and Pool D bonus point.

The Lelos went into the match aiming to make their opposition work hard and they did just that. The match was very physical and Argentina couldn't find a way past Georgia's strong defence for much of the game. With Argentina leading just 6-3 at half time Georgia were getting a sniff of what could have been their first Rugby World Cup victory.

Argentina's break came in the 47th minute when Lucas Borges crossed the line for the first try of the match which was converted by Felipe Contepomi to put Argentina at a 10 point lead. With renewed confidence the Pumas lifted their game and scored again a few minutes later.

Knowing that there is fierce competition for the top two spots of Pool D, Argentina carried on attacking hard in the hopes of scoring another two tries and thus picking up a bonus point. Their third try was scored by lock Patricio Albacete in the 72nd minute and their final try was scored by Federico Martin Aramburu just before fulltime.

With two wins Argentina are now sitting at the top of Pool D. They have 11 days to prepare for their next match against Namibia, a day after their main rivals France and Ireland play each other in Saint-Denis. Georgia have just 4 days of rest before meeting Ireland in Bordeaux.
