Australia beat Wales 32-20

15-Sep-2007

The Wallbies proved to be too strong for the Welsh in their RWC 2007 Pool B clash in Cardiff on Sautrady. Australia amassed a large first-half lead of 25-3 which Wales were were unable to surmount.

Tries by Matt Giteau, Stirling Mortlock and Chris Latham in the first half put Australia in a comfortable position but Wales had a good second half, with Jonathan Thomas opening the scoring with a try in the 45th minute. Wales later closed the gap to just 12 points with a penalty kick in the 54th minute.

The Welsh felt that they were in with a chance until Australian fullback Chris Latham retrieved his own high kick after Stehpen Jones failed to catch it clearly and Latham powered over the line adding another 7 points for Australia.

In the remaining 20 minutes of the match Australia received two yellow cards with Drew Mitchell and Nathan Sharpe being sent off. Wales' Shane Williams scored a try 4 minutes before full time and the Welsh had a go at scoring another - in the hope of gaining a bonus point - but time was not on their side and the whistle was blown with Austrlia up 32-20.
