Argentina destroy Namibia 63-3
22-Sep-2007
The Pumas showed their style against Namibia, dominating possession and scoring nine tries to win the match and put them back at the top of pool D.
Argentina started the game off a little slowly, winning by just 6-3 until the 25th minute when prop Rodrigo Roncero scored the first try after several attacks at the Namibian line. Knowing that they needed at least four tries to earn a bonus point and thus stay in with a good chance of topping pool D, Argentina struck back with more enthusiasm and managed two more tries before half time.
Going into the second half the Pumas looked stronger and faster than ever and Felipe Contepomi scored the critical fourth try five minutes into the half. From then on the game was all Argentina - it seemed that Namibia barely touched the ball. Five more tries followed, racking the score up to 63-3 - a record RWC winning margin for the Pumas.
Argentina are now at the top of pool D with 14 points followed by France on 10 and Ireland on 9. As long as the Pumas don't lose their game against Ireland by more than 7 points they are assured of qualifying for the quarterfinals, but they'll be aiming for win over the men in green to secure them the top spot of pool D, thus avoiding playing the All Blacks in the following match.
