Argentina destroy France 34-10 to win 3rd place in RWC 2007

19-Oct-2007

France looked very strong in the beginning, putting the Argentinian defence under a lot of pressure, but after 20 minutes all they could manage was a single penalty which Argentina matched a couple of minutes later. Then it was the Pumas that took control of the game - Felipe Contepomi scored the first try of the match and Omar Hasan scored another moments later to put the South Americans up 17-3.

There were some very tense moments shortly before half time as France tried desperately to score a try before halftime. A lot of agression ensued and referee Paul Honiss had some tough decisions to make, eventually sinbinning one player from each team. The Argentine defense was excellent and managed to hold the French off, allowing them to go into halftime 14 points up.

Les Bleus came back strongly in the first minutes of the second half but once again the Pumas kept their cool and defended superbly. Argentina's Federico Martin Aramburu scored in the 53rd minute, crushing French hopes of a second half comeback. But the Argentinians didn't stop there - two minutes after the sinbinning of Juan Manuel Leguizamón for a dangerous tackle they scored again, this time it was Ignacio Corleto who touched down.

France did eventually manage one try but being 17 points down with only 11 minutes left in the game a French victory looked impossibly unlikely. Three minutes before fulltime Contepomi scored his second try of the match and Argentina's victory was sealed. They actually came close to scoring yet another try in the last couple of minutes but the fulltime whistle was blown with the Pumas winning the match 34-10 and gaining third place in Rugby World Cup 2007.

Congratulations to the Argentinian team - the biggest stars of this year's Rugby World Cup and a 3rd place outcome that was thoroughly deserved.
